10 Of The Best Battle Royale Games To Play (That Aren’t Fornite)  –

Battle Royale games are nothing new, but the popularity of games like Fortnitehave increased interest resulting in a plethora of new titles. While few have managed to achieve the popularity of Fortnite, there are some that are definitely worth your time.

On those rare occasions when the server is down, or you simply want to play something else for a while, there are plenty of battle royale titles you can pick up. You may have played some of these in the past or heard of them, but the next time you want to play something other than Fortnite, you should check these out.

10 REALM ROYALE

Realm Royale is a free-to-play battle royale game that released back in mid-2018. The game was developed by Hi-Rez Studios and is similar to Fortnite in a number of ways.

Visually, the game shares a lot in common with World of Warcraft, but the play sets it apart from many of the other titles on this list. It is available on the PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

A hundred players drop from an airship and go about grabbing weapons and equipment as they dodge and slaughter their enemies. There are numerous types of play modes and the game features multiple characters. It was nominated for “Fan Favorite Battle Royale Game” at the 2018 Gamers’ Choice Awards.

TOTALLY ACCURATE BATTLEGROUNDS

Totally Accurate Battlegrounds (TABG) is a satire of the battle royale genre and a spin-off of its predecessor, Totally Accurate Battle Simulator. The graphics and gameplay place an exaggerated emphasis on players, weaponry, and weapon physics. The game was developed by Landfall for the PC.

While the game plays similarly to others in the genre, there are some differences that set it apart. Players run around collecting gear and killing enemies, but the exaggerated motions of the character and intense physics of weapon effects make it humorous. It’s a great deal of fun to play for veterans of the genre or amateurs looking to get into it.

SUPER ANIMAL ROYALE

Super Animal Royale is a completely different take on the genre but still functions as a battle royale game. Instead of the standard first or third person shooter, Super Animal Royale is a top-down, 2D, third-person shooter featuring as many as 64 players at a time.

Players can create different types of Super Animals for use in combat, which are unlocked via DNA collection through gameplay. This opens up new species and abilities, which makes the game far more customizable than many others in the genre. It was released to Early Access on Steam and will reach a final release sometime in 2019.

RULES OF SURVIVAL

Rules of Survival is a free-to-play battle royale game from NetEase Games. It was released in Beta in 2018 and claims to have more than 150 million registered players. The game follows the same rules as most in the genre but features different modes including Solo, Duo, Squad, and Fireteam.

The game features two playable maps, which come in the form of islands. Ghillie Island allows for up to 120 players on a 4.8×4.8km map while Fearless Fiord can feature as many as 300 players in an 8x8km zone. The game shares many similarities with others in the genre but is a fun alternate to Fortnite.

THE CULLING

When it was released in 2017, The Culling looked like it might take hold of the market, but thanks to Fortnite and PUBG, the player base waned. That’s unfortunate given the various maps and levels of gameplay that make The Culling a fun battle royale game. It was released on Linux, PC, and Xbox One.

A planned sequel never fully manifested, but because of that, the original game received a retooling and a reboot, which made it free-to-play. That reinvigorated interest in the title, which made it a fun alternative to games like Fortnite. The game features a relatively small arena consisting of only 16 players, which makes gameplay somewhat chaotic and exciting.

CALL OF DUTY: BLACK OPS 4

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is not a battle royale game on the surface, but it does feature a battle royale mode called BlackoutBlackout served as a stand-in for the usual campaign mode found in Call of Duty titles. The map for Blackout is the largest of any in the franchise.

Blackout enables players to play across multiple locations from previous Black Ops titles and allows players to use vehicles in combat. These can be either land, sea, or aircraft making gameplay intense and dynamic. Up to 100 players can join in with either Solo, Dios, or Quads gameplay.

APEX LEGENDS

Apex Legends was developed entirely in secret by Respawn Entertainment for release by Electronic Arts. News of the game was dropped as a complete surprise in February of 2019 with a release on the PC, Xbox One, and PS4. The game is set within the same universe as the Titanfall franchise.

Choosing a character is a big part of this game as each one comes with a passive ability, an active one, and a super ability. You can’t play solo in this game as each game requires the player to join a squad of three. All players jump into the area together via Jump Master, which keeps the team together for gameplay making Apex Legends unique in the genre.

RING OF ELYSIUM

Ring of Elysium offers a different take on the battle royale genre by establishing a level of realism typically absent in other titles. The game was developed by Tencent Games for release on Steam Early Access in 2018 and will likely be fully released in 2019.

The game features up to 60 players trapped on a snowy mountain. Players are forced to the top of a mountain via an ever-encroaching blizzard. A rescue flight awaits, but can only save four people, which leads the players to kill off their rivals to try and be one of the four as they traverse the snowy terrain.

H1Z1

H1Z1 is a free-to-play battle royale game that was in early access development on the PC for three years prior to its release in early 2018. It has since been ported to the PS4 and will be released on the Xbox One in 2019 (or later). H1Z1features a last-man-standing deathmatch of up to 100 players.

Players can enter the battle in solo mode, duo, or in groups of five, but only the last person standing in the final team will win the match. A toxic gas cloud is a mechanic that pushes players further and further into the map, bringing the final moments of gameplay into a level of intensity found throughout the genre.

PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, more commonly referred to as PUBG, is the biggest competitor on the market to Fortnite and the one most players pick up when they tire of it. The game was released later in the year than its competitor but was developed by Brendan Greene as a sort of homage to the Korean film, Battle Royale.

In the game, up to 100 players drop into one of four maps, which range in size from four-sq. km. to as much as eight0-sq. km. Players earn currency they can use to enhance their characters aesthetically. In 2018, the game was ranked as the second most-downloaded mobile game with as many as 300 million worldwide downloads.
