The 13 Most Ridiculous JRPG Monsters –
A good Japanese RPG will usual have a young, spiky-haired boy looking to save the world, perhaps with magic or a sword that is also a gun — just the regular kind of stuff you expect from a video game. But JRPG monsters? Well, those things can get weird. And here are the weirdest:
ANNOYING OLD PARTY MAN, EARTHBOUND
Unfortunately, an all-too common enemy in real life.
ON SECOND THOUGHT, PRETTY MUCH EVERY ENEMY FROM EARTHBOUND
Man, what a weird game.
HELL HOUSE, FINAL FANTASY VII
Not a Christian haunted house, to my disappointment.
MISHAGUJI, SHIN MEGAMI TENSEI
It’s actually kind of shocking just how few penis demons are in JRPGs, so kudos to the Shin Megami Tensei series.
EGG OOZE, CHRONO TRIGGER
The fact that these are sprites help cover up the questions they raise, like “how big are these eggs?” or “Are the egg yolks solid?”
NIGHT SNEAKER, DRAGON QUEST VIII
I guess it’s a monster that just gives you a really hard kick in the ass?
LIL’ KOBOLD, XENOGEARS
The monsters themselves aren’t weird, but it is weird that they’re specifically “lil’” as opposed to “little”.
BOWYER, SUPER MARIO RPG
Super Mario RPG has some weird monsters, but the weirdest is for sure the living bow and arrow that shoots arrows through its face.
KEFKA’S END BOSS FORM, FINAL FANTASY VI
Kefka is great, but he truly becomes a bonkers character once he becomes a tower of Gods that are almost Geiger-esque.
KRAKEN, SHINING FORCE II
Fighting a Kraken isn’t strange in and of itself, but what if every enemy in a strategy RPG fight is… ALL. ONE. ENEMY?!
KING SHAKALAKA, MONSTER HUNTER: FREEDOM UNITE
